“Tiger Mania”
The third stop from Konpira-san on the Kotoden (Kotohira Railway) train bound for Takamatsu is Okada. The surroundings are completely rural. But it is an important location where the principal roads of central Kagawa (those leading to Kotohira、 Manno、 and Marugame) all intersect.
The Okada Brewery was established in the year Meiji 39 (1906). It sells its sake directly from its production facilities、 right along the national highway connecting Takamatsu and Kotohira. The brewery is nice and tidy、 and they are currently working on preparations for a sake brewing museum.
The brewery’s owner、 Mr. Kobayashi、 runs the business along with his son. Even on the first time you meet them、 you can see that they are a really close father and son duo. The thing that binds them together is the Hanshin Tigers baseball team. There are a lot of Hanshin fans in Shikoku、 but those who are as frenetically crazy about the team as people from Kansai are few and far between. Among that small group of fans can be counted this father and son pair、 and it must be tough for the poor mother、 who stays at home. In fact、 no work gets done during the night game season. Regardless of a mother’s concerns、 the father and son say、 “If the Tigers finally win the Japan series、 like we have always hoped and prayed、 then we’ll give out free sake to anyone and everyone for three days and three nights straight!” Well、 since that’s the case、 everyone in the neighborhood should definitely root for the Tigers!
