Sake Brewery of the Shrine Grove

The Kinryō Hachiman Brewery is in a thick grove in Tadotsu、 the port town which serves those going to pray at Konpira Mountain. Most Kinryō sake、 which is used for traditional offerings at Konpira Shrine、 is made here at the Hachiman Brewery. Just like a shrine grove、 the brewery facilities are thickly surrounded by trees、 and a divine “air” wafts about that is different from that of the outside world. It is exactly the kind of brewery that makes you think、 “the brewing of sake is an art worthy of the gods!”

Mr. Nishihata、 the brewery’s director、 says、 “I get to work in this great environment、 surrounded by greenery. Thanks to that、 I never get sick、 even at this age.” Maybe it is because this “shrine” grove has something special to it.

Mr. Sakai、 who has the final responsibility for overseeing the sake’s production、 is a former All Japan Sake Tasting Champion. Though he has a gentle manner、 the flash of his stern-looking eyes reveals that he allows no room for compromise. He says that during the winter he shuts himself up in the brewery、 and in the summer he commutes to Saga in Kochi Prefecture to compete in biathlons (swimming and marathon running). Though to look at him you wouldn’t believe he’s in that kind of condition!

The other day、 a person related to the matter said、 “Mr. Sakai is so devoted to sake making that his wife has run out of love for him. So I heard they got a divorce!” But it was all just a rumor. In the end、 it was some kind of misunderstanding、 but it seems that when Brewery Director Nishihata heard about this、 he told everyone、 “That’s pretty funny! So from now on、 inside the factory、 let’s consider Mr. Sakai as good as divorced!” Can he really do that?

Mr. Nishihata and Mr. Sakai forged a common desire saying、 “Together we will protect and maintain this brewery from here on out!” Right when they made this pledge、 the company received a cost form by fax. Mr. Nishihata scrunched up his eyes and sighed、 “Lately、 I’ve had some problems with my retinas and I can’t read figures bringing bad news!” Hey、 Director Nishihata、 didn’t you say that you never get sick?!

Word of the Day

Will “Asahiyama Forest Park” eventually be a World Heritage sight in 100 years?

When I was looking for material for my article in the area around Kinryo in western Sanuki、 Assistant Official “M” sent me a note saying、 “I found an amusement park that rivals the fake Dis@#y Land in China!” Whether you want to call it information collecting or a field trip、 I headed straightaway to the scene!

My destination was a place called “Asahiyama Forest Park” in Takase. When I drove my car around behind Zouzu-san、 the mountain next to Konpira-san、 my eyes beheld a strange sight slightly elevated in front of me: a towering castle keep that held sway over the entire region before it. Aha! So that must be it! Even in the middle of udon tours various people have、 more than a few times、 pointed it out and asked、 “What is that?” But all of those time、 I always answered、 “It’s probably just the hideout of some religious cult group or something.” Or else I would laugh it off in a good humor saying、 “Maybe it’s just one of those new love hotels.” No matter what the case、 not even in my wildest dreams did I think this thing was something that Mitoyo City had jurisdiction over.”

Just as I expected、 when I climbed up to see this park at the top of the mountain、 it was a place where the stench of artificiality wafted through the air. The day I went to gather information、 there wasn’t a single person or child there、 but it was full of cherry trees and looked like it would be lively during the cherry blossom viewing season. But even given that、 what kind of theme could they possibly have been thinking of when they made this shoddy facility...?

It was exactly like the fake Dis@#y Land in China. The cartoon characters、 which looked like they had been drawn with some kind of old-fashioned menko (an old-fashioned toy for boys in Japan) and felt vaguely like you had seen them somewhere before、 were obviously made with blatant disregard for the original copyright. There was also the half-finished feel of a global theme. This is great! An imitation theme park!

Gods willing、 I hope that the park stays just as it is. Then maybe in 100 years、 we can expect the Tokyo Sports Newspaper to take it up as material for an article about mysteries of the world、 like the Nasca hieroglyphs or the Machu Picchu ruins in Peru、 and they would ask、 “Who built this? And When? And what for?” (Though right now it serves as plenty of sketchy article material as it is!)

4.Signboard for the park entrance at the foot of the mountain: “Japan’s Best Five-story Pagoda、 made of stone、 19 meters” This alone suggests the stench of artificiality.
5.The “Dragon Fountain” that conjures up a resemblance to the fake Dis@#y Land in China.
6.The “Animal Paradise” consisted of one rabbit、 and the “Bird Grove” had a chicken and a duck.
7.At least the view was impressive. I don’t know the reason for all of the other equipment – it just gets in the way!
8.This is the “castle tower” that you can see from below. What is it for anyway?
